Fort Macleod at a glance
Fort Macleod is a town of 3,297 residents as of the 2021 Census, sitting in southern Alberta about 50 kilometres west of Lethbridge on the Crowsnest Highway. It grew 11.1 percent from 2016.
Fort Macleod was named after the Fort Macleod NWMP barracks, built on October 18, 1874 as a 70-by-70-metre square. It became the second headquarters of the North-West Mounted Police after Fort Livingstone was abandoned in 1876, and remains one of Alberta's most important early-policing historic sites. The Fort Museum draws heritage tourism, and the downtown heritage district is one of Alberta's best-preserved main-street collections. Rentals lean single-family homes and small multi-unit buildings, with tourism-adjacent hospitality staff a distinct tenant segment in summer.
