Medicine Hat at a glance
Medicine Hat sits along the South Saskatchewan River in southeastern Alberta, roughly 300 kilometres southeast of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. It is Alberta's sixth-largest city with about 63,271 residents in the 2021 Census. The economy is built on natural gas processing, agriculture, the Goodyear tire plant, government (Alberta and municipal), Medicine Hat College, and Canadian Forces Base Suffield (in nearby Ralston, one of the largest military training areas in the Commonwealth).

The Gas City advantage
Medicine Hat is unique in Alberta because the city owns and operates its own natural gas utility and its own electric utility. It sits on one of the largest natural gas fields in North America and has been producing gas commercially since the 1890s. Rudyard Kipling, who visited in 1907, famously described Medicine Hat as having "all Hell for a basement." The result today is that household energy costs are consistently among the lowest in Canada.
