Medicine Hat at a glance

Medicine Hat sits along the South Saskatchewan River in southeastern Alberta, roughly 300 kilometres southeast of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. It is Alberta's sixth-largest city with about 63,271 residents in the 2021 Census. The economy is built on natural gas processing, agriculture, the Goodyear tire plant, government (Alberta and municipal), Medicine Hat College, and Canadian Forces Base Suffield (in nearby Ralston, one of the largest military training areas in the Commonwealth).

Section 2

The Gas City advantage

Medicine Hat is unique in Alberta because the city owns and operates its own natural gas utility and its own electric utility. It sits on one of the largest natural gas fields in North America and has been producing gas commercially since the 1890s. Rudyard Kipling, who visited in 1907, famously described Medicine Hat as having "all Hell for a basement." The result today is that household energy costs are consistently among the lowest in Canada.

The practical read

If you are budgeting winter utility costs, expect Medicine Hat's gas and electricity bill to run 20 to 40 percent below what you would pay in Calgary or Edmonton for the same-size apartment. Over a year that saves hundreds of dollars, which is real money on top of rents that are already cheaper than the majors.

Renting in Medicine Hat: Alberta tenancy law essentials

Medicine Hat sits at the affordable end of Alberta's rental spectrum. The 30-percent-of-gross-income rule of thumb leaves plenty of room. On a Statistics Canada Medicine Hat median household income of about $80,000, 30 percent covers most 2-bedroom apartments comfortably. Because the city owns its own gas and electric utilities, monthly household energy costs are consistently among the lowest in Canada, which extends every renter's budget further.
