Section 1

Dartmouth at a glance

Dartmouth sits on the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour, facing downtown Halifax. It was its own city until April 1, 1996, when it joined Halifax Regional Municipality, and the census tracts that made up the former city held about 72,100 people in Statistics Canada's 2021 Census. Two bridges, the Macdonald and the MacKay, and a Halifax Transit ferry from the Alderney and Woodside terminals connect it to the peninsula; the ferry crossing takes about 15 minutes.

Many renters choose Dartmouth for the commute and for its lakes, but it is a major job centre too. Burnside Industrial Park alone has close to 1,400 businesses, and Dartmouth General Hospital, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and the Shearwater base all sit on this side of the harbour. Tenancies here fall under the same Nova Scotia rules as anywhere else in the province, including the current cap on rent increases.
