Sydney at a glance
Sydney is the commercial centre of Cape Breton Island, with a population of roughly 29,900 people as of Statistics Canada's 2021 Census within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. It sits about 3.5 hours northeast of Halifax by highway, or a short regional flight, and serves as the gateway to the Cabot Trail and the rest of Cape Breton Island.
Cape Breton University anchors a meaningful share of local rental demand, drawing both domestic and international students, while Nova Scotia Health's Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the municipality's own workforce provide steadier year-round demand. Call centre and tourism jobs round out the local economy, and nearby Glace Bay and North Sydney offer smaller, lower-cost alternatives within the same regional municipality.
