Fernie at a glance
Fernie is an Elk Valley town of roughly 7,100 people as of Statistics Canada's 2025 estimate, about an hour east of Cranbrook. It's historically a coal-mining town, with Teck Coal's Elk Valley operations still the region's dominant employer, but Fernie Alpine Resort has built it into one of Canada's better-known ski towns as well.
That dual economy shows up in the rental market: mine-shift workers and seasonal resort staff compete for the same limited stock of houses and apartments in a town that's small to begin with. Rental demand here also carries real commercial intent, not just casual browsing, since both mine and resort jobs typically need housing arranged before the person arrives. Fernie's historic brick downtown holds most of the older rental stock, with newer builds concentrated toward the resort side of town.
