Timmins at a glance
Timmins is a city of 41,145 residents as of the 2021 Census, in Ontario's Cochrane District roughly 3 hours south of Moosonee and about 4 hours north of Sudbury by road. Amalgamated in 1973 from several mining communities including South Porcupine and Schumacher, Timmins is geographically one of the largest cities in Canada by area, though its population is concentrated in a handful of urban neighbourhoods.
Mining has defined Timmins' economy for over a century, from the historic Porcupine gold camp to Glencore's Kidd Operations, one of the deepest base-metal mines in the world. That mining base supports a rental market weighted toward single-family homes and duplexes rather than large apartment towers, with rental demand closely tied to mining-sector employment and shift work at the surrounding operations.
